Ichimoku Kinko Hyo

A Japanese 'one-glance equilibrium chart' created by Goichi Hosoda. Five lines and a projected 'cloud' show trend, support/resistance, momentum and entry signals all at once — designed so you can read the market at a glance. Very popular in forex and crypto.

What you will learn

Tenkan-sen (Conversion line)

Average of the highest high and lowest low over the last 9 periods. A fast line that tracks short-term momentum; acts as minor support/resistance.

Kijun-sen (Base line)

Average of the high/low over the last 26 periods. Marks the medium-term trend and a strong support/resistance level; price often pulls back to it.

Senkou Span A (Leading Span A)

The midpoint of Tenkan and Kijun, plotted 26 periods into the future. Forms one edge of the cloud.

Senkou Span B (Leading Span B)

The midpoint of the 52-period high/low, plotted 26 periods ahead. The other, slower edge of the cloud.

Chikou Span (Lagging line)

The current close plotted 26 periods into the past. If it is above past price the trend is strong; it confirms (or vetoes) signals.

Price above the cloud

Uptrend. The cloud below acts as support. Favour long setups.

Price below the cloud

Downtrend. The cloud above acts as resistance. Favour short setups.

Price inside the cloud

No clear trend / consolidation. Signals are unreliable — many traders stay out.

Cloud thickness & colour

A thick cloud = strong support/resistance that is harder to break; a thin cloud = weak. The colour flips when Span A crosses Span B, hinting at a possible trend change.

Tenkan / Kijun cross (TK cross)

Tenkan crossing above Kijun is bullish; below is bearish. Strongest when it happens above the cloud (bullish) or below it (bearish), in the trend's direction.

Cloud breakout

Price closing above the cloud flips the bias bullish; closing below flips it bearish. A core trend-following signal.

Chikou confirmation

A signal is stronger when the Chikou span is also clear of past price in the same direction (above price for longs, below for shorts).
