What you will learn

Regulation: the first filter

A serious broker is authorised by a top-tier regulator: FCA (UK), CNMV (Spain), BaFin (Germany), SEC/FINRA (US), ASIC (Australia). Verify the licence ON THE REGULATOR'S SITE (not the broker's) by its number. In Europe, ESMA caps retail leverage (30:1 forex) — if you're offered 500:1, you're outside European protection.

Segregated funds & protection

Your money must sit in accounts SEPARATE from the broker's own capital (segregation): if the broker goes bust, your funds stay out of the bankruptcy estate. EU-regulated brokers also join compensation schemes (~€20,000 via ICF, ~£85,000 via FSCS in the UK). Ask for both in writing before depositing.

Instant scam red flags

'Guaranteed' returns, deposit urgency ('offer ends today'), 'account managers' messaging you on WhatsApp/Telegram, withdrawals that never arrive or require 'paying taxes' first, and platforms where you only win until you ask to cash out. Any one of these = run.

Signal sellers & fake gurus

If their trading were as profitable as claimed, they wouldn't need to sell you courses, signals or €997 'mentorships'. The lifestyle (cars, watches) is usually rented and the profit screenshots come from demo accounts or Photoshop. ALWAYS demand a third-party audited track record (verified Myfxbook, years not weeks). Nobody gives away money on Telegram.

Ponzis & fake funding firms

A Ponzi pays old investors with new investors' money: 'fixed monthly return' + 'refer friends for commission' = pyramid scheme, no exceptions. With funding challenges, distrust firms with no verifiable payout history, rules engineered for you to fail, or that live ONLY from selling challenges — research real payouts in independent communities before paying.

Checklist before depositing

1) Licence verified on the regulator's site. 2) Years in business and a real physical HQ. 3) A small TEST withdrawal before any serious deposit. 4) Reviews on independent forums (not their own testimonials). 5) Never share passwords or install remote-control software (AnyDesk/TeamViewer) at an 'advisor's' request. 6) If it sounds too good, it is.
